The Burrards and the missing paintings

THE FAMILY
There are some difficulties in interpreting Sir Charles's sketch books, not least that some of his daughters were also accomplished amateur painters and their work is sometimes to be found mixed in with his.  On occasions there are even paintings which are clearly identified as collaborations between father and daughter.  Some of the uncaptioned pictures of flowers are almost certainly by one or more daughters.

A picture described as "Xmas 1860" and marked "EB" - almost certainly by Emily Burrard.

Only one photograph of Sir Charles and his family is know to survive, taken by JC and E Short of the Post Office, Lyndhurst, perhaps on the occasion of Alice Burrard's marriage to the Rev. W.H.Lucas.  It might possibly be at Minstead Manor.

The missing Burrard paintings - can you help ?
The New Forest Museum in Lyndhurst is endeavouring to build up a collection of photographs of all known Burrard paintings, because of their local history importance.  However, one entire volume is missing.  It was reviewed in "Country Life" on 27th February 1947 and we know that it comprises a sketch book eight and a half inches by five and a quarter inches and has a brass clasp.  It was sold at Hamptons Fine Art auction (Godalming) on 7th December 1994, but cannot be traced beyond that.  It contains some important New Forest paintings, in addition to views in London, the Isle of Wight and Christchurch.

ARE YOU THE OWNER OR DO YOU KNOW WHO IS ?
if so, please contact

Similarly, there must be other paintings, not known, which survive in private hands and the Museum would be very glad to have copies of these also.  If you can help in locating them, please contact the above address.

If you are interested in seeing the full photographic collection of known Burrard paintings, it is housed in the New Forest Museum, High Street, Lyndhurst, Hants on CDs.  The Museum's website is:-
