Sir Charles Burrard's life traced through his paintings

Little is recorded of Sir  Charles's life, but it is possible to trace some of his travels through the paintings he has left.  It seems plain that he toured widely in southern Britain, visiting the homes of family and friends and sketching as he went.  His known (post war) continental paintings are in Italy and adjacent states, perhaps reflecting a diplomatic  appointment in the Lushington family at Naples.

Most Burrard pictures are carefully dated and their locations recorded below or adjacent in the sketch book or bound volume. Many are signed "CB" in the bottom right corner.  There are, however, quite a number of unidentified and undated pictures, the location of which can sometimes be guessed.

It was his usual practice to prepare sketches on the site, making careful notes on colouring (which can often be read through the subsequent watercolour).  Sometimes colour was also applied in the field and in these instances the pictures are often marked "cold. on spot".
